Every time you post on Twitter, you produce value for the advertisers.

You tell everyone in your network there that it's OK to stay. That you're all helpless to leave.

You tell the people who've lost their jobs, the people who are being hounded and harassed, that they are not important to you.

You know you're going to be ashamed of it later.

Just stop posting.

Do it here, not there. Connect here, not there.

Don't reply, don't like, don't retweet.

Stop feeding your life into the machine.
or you stay and fight

you tell everyone in your network that it's not okay to surrender spaces to fascists without a struggle

you tell the people who've lost their jobs that we'll resist the new owner using his own wealth and resources

you provide an alternative example for all the normies still there that they don't have to be radicalized and recruited by haters and inciters of violence
@ares I agree with fighting them. But when the β€œspace” is defined by the people and connections and ongoing content, is it actually surrendering to simply, collectively, turn away from Elmo and his thralls? Or is it winning?
@ares
I'm only posting things I won't post here because I like this space and my inner troll has to be let out from time time time. ;)
You are 100% correct! Another way of saying it is: stop sharecropping... Because, creating value on someone else's property (in a fashion similar to silos like Twitter) is sharecropping point blank.
(With apologies to my friends who had ancestors who sharecropped IRL. ) ✊
I've come to agree that it's the only way. At the same time, I still have a big lifeboat I want to throw to my 16 years of friends there. So I maintain a minimal presence until my servers are out of dry dock. But I'm trying to prepare many for that day when it's going to be a big stigma they have to wear. And should be. I don't believe most want to stay. They just need help getting over a fear of losing years of connections that they don't have to lose, if they start now.
I've heard from Black folks here say that hastag-BlackTwitter there is a literal life-saver for many, and is used to keep the community quickly well-informed of relevant issues, e.g. killings by police. Unfortunately, there is not anything nearly as effective here, yet. I'd love everybody and that community in particular to migrate ASAP, but it will take at least a little time. How can we help?
@jamesmarshall I think there's an option for early adopters to build a more just and welcoming environment so that when communities move here it's already a better place.
I’ve started telling people to get a lifeboat now. It’s a migration. It’ll take some time.

But it’s also my pinned tweet. Which I am pointing to in each tweet in a β€œTwitter delenda est” spirit.

i’ve stopped posting!
Doesn't even connecting to the service (via web or app) also increase their monthly active user count? Best to never visit at all.
Imo that is probably not going to happen as long as our government officials and MSM and our followers stay.
@Kitchi why do you think your followers stay
@WTF
Thing is if you are trying to get traction at the moment, you need to use all the major SMs. It's hard to get any click throughs anyway, but counting yourself out of those atm is like halving your audience. It will happen; it just needs cross posting.
Obvious elephant in the room. You maintained a presence on Twitter from 2014 to 2022. Why ?
@andyc neither an elephant nor in this room.

There's a qualitative difference in Twitter since the purchase.
@andyc

> There's a qualitative difference in Twitter since the purchase.

Pray tell what that difference is.

I'm fascinated by the fact that I've been looking, and yet *not one person* has shown one single piece of evidence of wrongful behaviour. The most I've got so far are "I've seen messages I didn't like" 🀷 and "they fired people" (yes, so do the rest of IT).

So objectively speaking, what is that "qualitative difference"?
I've just posted this:

I'm really enjoying finding interesting people on Mastodon.

If you're thinking of giving up, don't. You make your own choices here, rather than letting algorithms spoon feed you!
J'approuve ce message. Plus question de toucher Γ  mon compte t*itter et de donner de l'importance Γ  cette plateforme toxique
The birdsite is a deadman walking. Elon loaded it with so much debt that the interest payments per year alone is $1 billion minimum. The cybersec teams, the infra support teams & the moderation teams have been gutted. And all the crazies who've been banned from the site are back in while the people who've been fighting extremism & bigots have been banned or shadow banned

You can't even post a mastodon link over there without getting a warning. Wake up & head for the exits.
Use movetodon.org to find your birdapp follows here.
πŸ‘ Yes, stop feeding the ego of the fascist oligarch.
better yet, delete your account. Be brave.
there are still very valid reasons to stay on Twitter - especially for activists. And I don't think we have to worry about making Elon money, he's going to lose billions on this no matter what any of us do.
An alternative is to go private ("protected"), which prevents others from taking your handle and impersonating you. A regular post once every few months, pointing to the fediverse, should keep the account from getting culled.
haven’t been back once since he moved in!
> You tell the people who've lost their jobs,

Amazing how all of a sudden people "care" about these things.

Have you also stopped using Facebook, Google, IBM, and everyone else who's reducing headcount these days?

What have you actually *done* about it? Have you hired any talent? Have you petitioned for a change in labour regulations to make the US more like civilised countries?
It's going to be the same crap like when I tell people to delete Facebook. They're not just lazy, they're addicted. People who chase clicks instead of doing something meaningful need to reassess their priorities.
People are literally neglecting their kids because they're addicted to social media.
This is not different from heroin.
People just can't stay off their phones.
yeah I still need to read it for work, but at this point if I need to engage, I will try every method possible to do so through other means. This has the added benefit that when you text someone to say you liked their post, you can actually start a conversation, and encourage them to get off the dying site
finally cut the cord today. In good conscious I could no longer stay. I’m gonna miss the sports related info, but I’ll be fine. Had enough of the unchecked and promoted bigoted content.
@zygie24 now you have a chance to become the sports influencer in Mastodon
I love the way you think Evan. If I only knew how lol. I guess it’s never too late to learn.
@zygie24https://www.wikihow.com/Become-Popular-on-Social-Media
I agree with you 100%, Evan.
I shut down my Twitter account. Fuck Musk.
@wion why? I link so people know I'm the same person.
Does mastodon have any financial strategy to keep it running if its number of users increases by an order of magnitude? Without future potential advertisers and dependence on advertising profits?
@bajker Mastodon software is made by a non-profit.

https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2021/08/mastodon-now-a-non-profit-organisation/

Mastodon instances are run by different entities.

I pay for my personal one myself.

Other instances are run by organisations for their staff.

There are instances run by individuals.

Some take donations.

Others are run by cooperatives.

I think in-stream ads are going to be a hard business model for this network, since readers can filter them out.

Does that answer your question?
you have Just earned my boost, thank you! βœŒοΈπŸ‘
I've started disconnecting from #Twatter reposting people. Tired of it.
@wion OK. Good luck in your work.
How can we retweet posts from Mastodon? I'd love to share posts from here on blogs I frequent.
@kaydenpat just copy the link and paste where you want
Okay. I'll give it a try. Thanks.
I will not even boost or like a post here that links back there!

That's exactly what pushed me over the edge to leave. I don't want to provide anymore value to the system.
