I guess a lot of people understand different things in "ending poverty". I imagine this article claims that ending poverty is like continuing the covid help programs. But is that the case or would we then just say that poverty still exists?
The "poverty line" is defined by the minimum income needed to purchase essentials for living such as food and housing. If everyone has access to income greater than the poverty line, then poverty has been eliminated.
It's generally helpful to read the article before commenting rather than imagining what it claims. 😀
Oh, I did read it. But the poverty line is not god given. It gets adjusted from time to time.
The specific 'poverty line' is not the point. The cost of poverty and its elimination is.
as income increases, so does the "poverty line" which is gauged by "half of median income". The Henderson poverty line is somewhat outdated and not a very good guage. As @Rasmus Fuhse said, the poverty line gets adjusted. So, theoretically we will never "end poverty". However, enabling people to live comfortably in a fairly rich country seems a pretty sensible idea to me. As the article suggests, being poorer than most people is not a crime and should not be punished so why are we doing that?
guage - fruit for rich people. most of us will never see one ;)
