Discovered these 2009 photos of Laconica Hackfest by @zcopley!

Laconica is the first piece of the #fediverse. It took a over decade of work to blossom into what it is today... Some participants who have taggable handles on this version of the protocol:

as a greek I can't help but wonder - where did Laconica take its name from?
@panos "Laconic" means "concise", so I assume it meant to accurately describe a microblogging software.
this makes sense, but the origin of the word has to do with Laconia in ancient Greece, so I wondered if it had something to do with that as well!
@panos Here's the etymology of "laconic" according to EtymOnline:
literally "of or pertaining to the region around ancient Sparta in Greece, probably via Latin Laconicus "of Laconia," from Greek Lakonikos "Laconian, of Laconia," adjective from Lakon "person from Lakonia," the district around Sparta in southern Greece in ancient times, whose inhabitants famously cultivated the skill of saying much in few words. When Philip of Macedon threatened them with, "If I enter Laconia, I will raze Sparta to the ground," the Spartans' reply was, "If."
@panos is Greek and they are the original founder. I would also like ot hear that history!
yeah, I figured! I'm administrating a fediverse instance (using calckey), living in Corinthia, close to Laconia =)
@panos it's very simple! "Laconic" means "terse, brief, curt" in English. Since microblogging is all about brevity, I thought it was a good match. And I was into .ca domains at the time, so laconic + .ca makes Laconica.
