Don't ignore the contribution of anonymizing communication channels. Back at the dawn of this sort of network one of the first troubling symptoms was the emergence of trolls. Even where there is some continuing online relationship people feel free to express themselves in ways they never would in person.
You're right, that is also an important factor. And maybe it goes beyond that. The loss of social cohesion in the late XX and early XXI century probably also contributes to the growing polarization. People don't know their neighbors anymore, and electronic devices and main-stream social networks make people become more and more isolated. Therefore, when they are lured into embracing feelings of hate and racism (to name a few examples), they don't feel they have much to loose in terms of "social face". I wonder if newer generations will also fall into the same patterns. I am currently raising a 1 year old and I don't want to expose her to technology until she's 3-4 years old, and social networks will be a no-no until she's 16 at least. Well, that's my plan. Let's see how it goes.
@HernanLG There’s a good guide about #children and screens. (In French though.) : https://www.3-6-9-12.org/les-balises-3-6-9-12/
Thanks @Zron! Indeed I don't read French, but it's nothing that Deepl cannot translate. Very much appreciated <3
@Zron
@HernanLG 😁 Glad you appreciate! πŸ˜‰
I’m not an expert on this subject, but I find the guide is a good summary and easy to understand for children too. Also, I heard #SergeTisseron on the radio πŸ“» and found him wise and nice. 😊
Not sure, but maybe something similar exists in other countries. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ
