Saroyan - I had kind of forgotten. We do go to Monterey/Pacific Grove rather more often than we go to Salinas. Although my preferred authors who touched the Monterey Bay area are Richard Henry Dana (Two Years Before the Mast) and Wallace Stegner (Angle of Repose.) A few years back we considered moving to Pacific Grove.
It bugs me how east coast folks tend to think that there is no history here along the west coast. Too bad we don't know the histories of the aboriginal people who were here before the Spanish came and who were utterly decimated when the Americans arrived. But we do have Drake and Cabrillo and Serra and De Anza and Fremont (a true nut case). Where else did the US Navy invade and then, realizing that there was no war, apologized and re-boarded their ships?
