On March 29th, 2023 the Social Web Incubator Community Group (SocialCG) met and the idea of a regular gathering of Fediverse developers was raised.

This group would be focused on the practical implementation of Fediverse related specifications such as ActivityPub, Webfinger and HTTP Signatures to build software for the Fediverse. Not spec direction discussions such as evolution proposals. It would give a time and space to support collaborating and advising each other on best practices for real-world interoperability and documentation of what we learn.

Using successful examples of education and documentation such as the Mozilla Developer Network and Oauth2 as models, collectively we can empower more developers to build things for the Fediverse easier.

Short term high level goals from an initial gathering

  • Determine what this organization could look like.
  • Discuss having a dedicated representative from each active and future project (ambassador) to be a part of this group. To be available for Federation and interop discussion.
  • Discuss the future of Fediverse-level documentation that includes best practices, testing resources, and examples how to federate with existing projects as well as "getting started" resources for new implementors.

Acknowledgements

  • While this was discussed in a completely open meeting of the SocialCG, further discussion of this idea took place during the FediForum Unconference, where not all Fediverse-focused projects were represented.
  • It's acknowledged that there have been, and are, different attempts, focusing on different goals in different ways, to organize Fediverse enthusiasts and developers. This is not to downplay or discredit them.
  • No time and date is perfect for everyone, especially globally. But in hopes of starting something somewhere a time was selected that's soon enough to keep the momentum from the SocialCG meeting moving.
