I just discovered Arcmage, a free and open source self-described collectible card game inspired by Magic: The Gathering. Not sure about the "collectible" part because you can buy the full card sets (5 extensions of 50 cards have been published).

You may want to have a look at the (more modest) project KeeperOfTheCards. It has a ressource cost system that allows one to create new cards from a pool of building blocks without killing the game.
Haven't tried the actual game yet but love the core concept.

@Liwott Thank you for the suggestion! I looked into it but while I salute the concept, I miss the original card illustrations that Arcmage offers.
