From the same thread there also seems to be fake masto.host domains flying around, but a domain pattern block would affect legitimate servers.

The base domain https://fediversesearch.com is harmless that I know of, but someone using it to spawn spurious sub-domains acting as Mastodon servers. This server domain pattern will block these generated sub-domains without preventing access from the base domain.

I believe it's spoofing. This is why I can't encourage to block masto.host subdomains, but for fediversesearch.com it is fine.
