The downside is that it doesn't really have any mobile apps, though they're trying to add the MastoAPI.
It's a great Facebook alternative, and a pretty mature project at this point.
I have to strongly advise against Diaspora, because they refuse to federate with the rest of the fediverse (won't adopt Activitypub)
