I wonder if someone ever ran the numbers on how many users per masto instance would be optimal in terms of power consumption. single user instances are most probably not optimal at all (not throwing shade though friends), and we all know that bigger instances might mean more resources, longer requests processing, etc. so where would that sweet spot be ? of course that would also mean to take into account that not all fedi runs Mastodon so alternative servers might have a different result, etc...

has anyone ever looked into this or has an idea of how such statistics could be obtainable ?
@morgan Just from a resource consumption, it would be more efficient to have the entirety of the #Fediverse in just one big instance. Inter-instance communication is a huge overhead that I expect represent the bulk of the power consumption.

As such power consumption isn't a meaningful metric for decentralized social media instances.
