Those early instructions in 2010 went outside my skill set at the time. Few pods were allowing people in. Now I installed my own, and I am glad for it. Diaspora is pleasant to use. I fear that independent, ethical (non manipulated) social media in the hands of users themselves, will eventually be outlawed with the help of the fear-filled, blind mob. Your image speaks of dispersal, freedom, but also fragility. It is up to every person to make the ground fertile for seeds to grow.
