I'd share with folks that unlike pretty much all other social media, we have more agency and choice here. Just about everyone likes the sound of that, but then they don't immediately realize the flip side: it takes a bit more time and effort to find and engage with folks.
So the "how to fediverse" hint I've offered is more about highlighting that difference and adjusting expectations.
Ditching the algorithm is hard when most folks don't feel their dependence on it, I think.
