#feditip for ya if you're thinking of moving servers.

Find a server run by someone who knows how to run an online community. Check the admin's bio; if it talks about x years of experience moderating and running communities, awesome. If it talks about all the computer stuff they know, uh-oh.

You can also add ?min_id=0 to the end of the admin page's URL to find their earliest posts and by extension how old the server is.

Most of the servers made in November 2022 will not stick around long.
And for the love of god. Please. New server operators. I've spent a couple of years writing a thread about all the silly crap I wish someone had told me before I started my own online community. It's my first pinned toot.

I spent a couple decades learning stuff The Hard Way and now I see computer-oriented people who have ZERO relevant experience spinning up servers with tens of thousands of users and asking for money, and please. No. Christ.

Don't learn the hard way. The hard way HURTS.
