IT keeps all the stupid people out, so it's a good thing IMHO, lol
Merci pour cette magnifique création 😍
it is pretty complex. And it might be the fault of my home server, but browsing people from other servers is hard because lots of their posts don't always show up. Then I have to go on the http interface, view more posts, and do the whole server-interchange thing when I want to interact.
and also i dunno if it's that cool to feel superior about having higher familiarity with net tech
@SOB2 Hey, sorry if the reading of my comic strip is "superiority". That wasn't my intent. 😔
In fact, this morning, my TL on Tw was full of threads crypto/nfts/AI/web3 influencer against "mastodon complexity". An irony in regards of their topic.
So, that's why I sketched this strip, mostly about people not doing the effort or low effort and then using a pretext of "bad UX" , "Complexity" or anything else to justify their final behavior: keep Twitter and trying to influence other to do so too.
oh lol. That certainly is ironic coming from them
I see a correlation between shilling crypto (a scam) and stupidity, so they probably struggling not with just Mastodon, but can be expected that they couldn't use email.

And if cryptobro is also fan of Elon Musk (98% propability), then it's sure not about "complexity", they will find a reason to hate Mastodon and praise Twitter under new management. I've seen a post, where Mastodon is bad because... it's created by russian german (since racism on twitter is now a "freedom of speech", you can make that shitty takes)

@davidrevoy@SOB2
Maybe it would have less of a "superior" vibe and more of a "ridiculous" one if there was another character that climbed on a still available ladder?
@lanodan@SOB2 Ha maybe. I thought it was obvious because it was *a bird* that the character was doing almost no effort, aka not even trying it more than a flap of wing. Thanks for the feedback!
@lanodan@SOB2 I dunno, the bird leaping futilely is v relatable right now and I have been making a sincere effort.

Do I need to find and follow a bunch of huge accounts I'm not interested in just to unlock access to see simple things like posts from other servers with hashtags? Or do I have to have followers before I can see any content? Dozens of searches with zero results so far.
@erinsnarks

Ha, I guess the search box of your instance has difficulties but I met the issue sometimes and it can be just a simple 'hiccup of the network' due to the unprecedented very large incoming of new subscriptions.

Maybe you can use an external tool temporary like Fedisearch https://fedisearch.skorpil.cz , enter a keyword and you'll have a lot of URL (formated like email, name@instance.com) to follow. Copy/paste this URL address and enter them on your search bar. Goodluck

@lanodan@SOB2
> almost no effort, aka not even trying
To me it does look like that. Like the bird is stomping on the ground trying to grab their attention, not jumping to get there and join everyone 🤷
@lanodan@SOB2
@SOB2
Are you using the official Mastodon app or one of the other ones?

The official Mastodon App... needs some updates to be better, but many of the other ones have the option front and center to see the other Mastodon communities.
god I love your art style so much, I remember watching your krita tutorials a few years ago and loving seeing how you built up your work
Woah, I didn't know that you are familiar with Aesop !
@teteotolis A very good source of deep morale from an ancient time 👍 Perfect source for story tellers.
indeed, he was great 😃
True. Some give up way too early
I've never had a Twitter account, but I left Facebook, last year, and never looked back.

I was introduced to Mastodon through StartPage. It took some time to adjust, but I'm enjoying my time here.

The benefits of community and no algorithm very much outweigh the cost of time taken to adapt. I'm certainly happy to donate to Mastodon versus having my data and habits sold for Facebook's "free" services.

Most of all, I would have never known about Pepper & Carrot without Mastodon!
So do you guys ever talk about anything other than Twitter on here?
@nikki@David Revoy at any other time, yes

these days, when our timeline is 50% new users from twitter and 50% people welcoming new users from twitter, a bit less :D
@valhalla@auxanges Hey, 🤣 yes we do, you can check the history of my toots. It's just the hot topic of the week. It will pass quickly (probably) don't worry. ☺️
to be fair, it is complex. The Twitter interface is very straightforward compared to the fediverse.
@baltimorelili

I'm not sure. The interface to post a new toot might be, the settings a little bit too, but here the global rules are far less complex.

I mean; they are consistent: the TL shows toots by date, no ranking algorithm to please with mystic tendency keywords, no random post from what your subscriptions "liked" or "replied", no adv in the TL.

These things are what I find complex to explain to a beginner. Here, it feels fairer for interactions, imo, and so, easier to get.
Perfect message and adorable art style :BlobhajTinyHeart:
@Spix_Weltschmerz_Pucket Hey, welcome and I hope you'll find comfort here with time.
Web3 guys are grumpy that they can't figure out how to make money off it. :blobcatcoffee: They can keep eating their tails where they are, I guess. XD
The art in this is pretty communicative in its own way. Like I enjoy looking at it.
hajahahahahaha, yea, indeed
But they look so adorable that I feel bad for them :ablobcathappypaws:
I’m slowly learning. I’m determined to get those grapes… I mean, the fediverse.
It is a bit different, but not difficult. You'll get the hang of it. 💥
BREF... 🤣 Ésope FTW.
so this is literally my first reply on my first day of being on Mastodon. I wanted to like your post... but can't figure out how
@ScoutFinch@David Revoy On Mastodon, “likes” are called “favourites”. You make a post a “favourite” of yours by clicking on the small star-shaped icon below the post.
@dgouttegattat@ScoutFinch You are doing great ScoutFinch! Thanks for your first message and welcome here.
Yes, "fav" was also used on Tw in the past before they replaced it by 'heart/like'. I prefer the nuance of 'favorite' as it can be a way to collect something, or give it a star. "Like" can have deeper implications and personal engagement.

On the web interface, I also have the "bookmark" option under the three dots (under the toot). This is precious for keeping docs for later.
to be fair, it is a significant learning curve if the fediverse is an entirely new concept to you.
@EmprexMintaka Oh yes, it is. It's require more than a single flap of wing to get here, that's what I wanted to show. I also wanted to speak about Twitter user saying/assuming it is too complex without even trying it.

Welcome here, btw 👍
this was an entirely new concept to me upon my migration from the bird site. But I'm always game to learn something new. I basically spent one half of my Sunday learning this and the other half playing Undertale. So it was quite an eventful day for me 🤣 🤣 🤣.
The only turn off to mastodon I can think of is the confirmation emails being slow. It took over a day for mine to arrive!
@afastaudir8 Mine may have came in earlier than that, but God it felt like forever.
@loser9000 I was thinking Gmail was filtering out the emails for some odd reason
@afastaudir8 honestly, I thought that the people behind Mastodon themselves were the ones emailing me. That was my reasoning behind why it took so long.

Now the Gmail filtering thing might have also been possible, who the hell knows?
@loser9000@afastaudir8 Oh yes, I heard some instances have a hard time processing all the new subscriptions. I'm sure it will be smoother in a big week from here.
once it takes off its just great 😊
I'm dead 💀 🤣 - great timeless story so relevant today
new here, and can confirm, confusing
@Tortogus Welcome here and thanks for the extra efforts 👍
dude I'm so confused but I'm giving it a try 😅
@SkyGriever You are doing great, I well received your message 👍
It’s so simple even the dimmest individual with a degree in hyperbolic topology can figure it out.
that was me earlier today, but only cause I had mad delay receiving the confirmation email.
There are definitely pain points to work out with the onboarding process (although the decentralized nature of the fediverse might just be a thing that is tough to explain) so I don't think it's entirely their fault. Lots of people get stuck when they try join a server, and it's full because everyone is trying to join that server, and then they don't know what other server to sign up with.

I think there's room for improvement.
this is so hard, but I will give my best
@kyok 👍 👍 👍
@kyok
I am interested in sticking around to learn, and thereafter learn new things from interesting people.
even tho I am a Twitter transplant who heard of this platform yesterday. Glad to be here and have a place to hang with other twitfugees and make some new friends.

I did see a bunch of people just like this. Working fine for me…I think. Haha
also. Your artwork is fantastic! Amazing work
@Bendo2Levi ☺️ Thanks! and I hope you'll have a good time here.
super true. Beautifully illustrated, too
I'm... trying to figure it all out xD Still not sure how to follow people from the explore feed, need to work out how to really find all the interesting peoplei might want to follow and have an easy to click follow button :3
@obinice Hey, I see on your profile you already succeed at following other accounts, so you are doing great. 👍

You can use the search bar and enter hashtags keywords to find people sharing things around your interest. Have a good journey here.
Twitter and Mastadon are 2 different beasts. Can't be compared.
@Badhon Hey, you sent an empty reply. No problem, I just wanted to let you know for a feedback.
Welcome here!
its same with any change or switch. People want the same thing that they are used to. 1 to 1 clone :)
@riderexmachina@SeanDFW@SOB2 Here I use 90% of the time the browser/computer version ( with the multicolumn preference activated, a la 'tweetdeck' because I like to keep an eye on art hashtags ), but when on mobile, I use Tusky. I couldn't find my server instance listed on the official app. 😅
@SeanDFW@SOB2
I hear good things about Metatext on iPhone but I use Tusky and Fedilab on Android
I’m doing my part! Bringing folks over from Twitter, and answering their questions.
I am amazed how easily many people are giving up. It's simply not that hard. I am a tech-limited boomer--if I can get it, anyone can.
@reido Welcome here! Many are not even trying before spreading it is "too complex" or "bad UX". It's just a way to preserve their initial network and to influence against Mastodon. I see this trend growing.
mastodon4 does have serious ux problems (sidebar on the right *when you are using a mobile device*, totally unreasonable cause the small width is made even smaller). a lot of users on servers that have upgrades to mastodon4 have complained about it.
and to make things worse, the "official" sites, where many people find their way into, are running mastodon4.
@tusooa Oh right, I have no idea about Mastodon v4; I just had a check on my instance https://framapiaf.org/about/more and it looks like I run on v3.5.3 .
Thanks for this precious info! @reido
I think it's mostly low frustration tolerance. We have gotten very used to plug-and-play, so any negotiating we have to do to get something set up is intolerable. tl:dr--we are spoiled.
I love how you draw chibi animals lol
@sho_ishto
Ha, sure, from the perspective of the user with app on mobile, I can see the extra difficulties if you have to go first with a browser to signup for a server, do all the confirmation/email things, then later take an app and setup the app to work with the server. I'm using it mainly with a computer, so I just had to signup on a server and everything was ready to use via the browser. It was an easier first impression for sure.

@reido
@sho_ishto ☺️ Welcome here, btw! @reido
I like that it looks like the bird can't fly.
I just figure I’m going to take it slow and learn as I go. :) I love the no rush community vibe here.
@conanmckegg Take your time, and enjoy sailing on the Fediverse, I hope you'll forge yourself a comfy TL and community. Welcome here ☺️
it’s been a great chance to reset from the toxicity and sniping on the birb. Hence me posting more about my cats and less about politics. ☺️
@SOB2 I just made a test here, and on the search box of my instance, if I enter 'cherry' I'll have: 1 user named cherry recommended on top, then two toots of replies from myself where I use the idiom 'cherry-picking', then only hashtag recommended using prefix or suffix around the keywords cherry.
So, true, it doesn't scan all the toots of the local server, and less the toots/posts from the fediverse at large. Probably because it would be very server intensive to request that.

@erinsnarks
hahhahahaha incredible!!
@SOB2@erinsnarks Just a follow-up for something I just learnt even if I use Mastodon since 2017:

"There's no direct word-search here either; that means you want to use hashtags to make posts more searchable. This is also intended, since word-searching posts was often used to harass/stalk on the birdsite and elsewhere, so that was left by the wayside here. This also means hashtags are much more a thing here than any of the algorithm-powered sites."
a quote from https://infosec.exchange/@chrisabides/109309319819177873
I only just now realized you are THE David Revoy who shares Krita resources. I shouldnt be surprised to see you here yet I am. You are an open source awareness king for artists
Alas, it’s not the complexity that’s getting me. It’s the fact that nothing seems to be working. 😢
@cliffhensley Yes, a lot of slowdown on big instances because the network was never tested to receive half a million new subscriptions in less than a week, it is unprecedented! Administrators are scaling up their servers (I can't imagine the costs behind it). It might be smoother in two weeks from here.
Ahh, ok, so things in experiencing such as not seeing any new Posts in the Post feed for the past 72 hours is definitely a result of server issues, and not some obscure design intent I hadn’t figured out yet? That’s good to know. I’ll be glad to see what this place is like once everything is running smoothly again. 👍
@cliffhensley Hey, I checked your profile, and you are following no other account. You'll not have recommendation, or suggestion here, you need to use the search box, and search for hashtags. Discover peoples sharing interest, and follow them. That's a way to populate a post feed/TL. Good luck with it.
Thanks for looking! I appreciate you trying to help, truly. I’ve actually followed a bunch of people, but it still says I’m following no one. If I search them out though, and open their profile, it says I’m already following them, even though according to my profile following count I’m not. Also, there are accounts showing up in the “Post” timeline on the Mastodon app, none of whom I actually follow. But even the “Post” timeline stopped updating a few days ago.
@cliffhensley Oh wow, that sounds like a bug happened. I have no idea how to fix it. Maybe try to connect to your account directly via a browser on a computer at mastodon.online to check if you can perform things. Maybe the app has a hiccup. I hope you'll find a way to enjoy & browse the network of toots.
I’ll give it a shot. Thanks for your help. You’ve been very gracious. have followed you as a result and am also going to check out your work. Looking forward to it!
LOL Trying to figure all this out as a new user!
@AuburnBlue Courage! and welcome here ☺️
Everyone knows canines cant eat grapes/raisins anyway, right?

"Boohoo! I dont need the poison anyway!"
Honestly, do we want someone who thinks signing up here is too complicated?
@Cascadianprepper Well, for sure, I can't tell because the palette of humans, ages, education to digital can be very wide. But for sure, a lot of documentation, tutorial, video and thread exist to guide them. So, if they abandon too quickly, it really show not a lot of effort or time to get it.
I’m trying!!! 😆
@tignish Keep good and welcome here 😉
Twitter user here. I made it!

It's been entertaining to watch the Twitter dumpster fire over the last 2 weeks, but it's clear that it's burning itself out quickly. I hope to find as much entertainment here as I did there!
most of the people I have seen talking about the complexity made me think more it was about their preference for a centralised system which more easily allows reaching a wider audience rather than genuinely finding Mastodon complex.

It might make it easier to promote a podcast but it's what has enabled most of the toxic content on Twitter. I'm sure there's toxic content on mastodon but I don't see it and it makes a nicer experience.
You draw very well. The expressions on the fox are superb.
fantastic illustration David
fwiw David, I find Tw*tt*r more confusing than Mastodon.
