The mastodon.social server is currently under a heavy DDOS attack and may not work properly.

The 12,164 other servers on the network are unaffected.

This is part of the reason why federated networks are a good idea: if one server goes down, the others work fine.

The more spread out we are on small and medium sized servers, the harder it is for anyone to take down the network because there's no obvious target.

There are also many other reasons why federation is good: https://fedi.tips/why-is-the-fediverse-on-so-many-separate-servers
Indeed. Continuing life here on my own #Friendica instance 🌄
Users should donate $5 a month to their server.
Indeed. It's only fair with the cost and time which is required. If the servers don't show ads they need income in another way. I have seen some Diaspora instances charging 5 euros per month for membership.
one thing I don't know about the #fediverse yet: can other servers still show posts from a DOS'ed server if the other servers' users have retooted them?
Det kommer an på om opslaget er blevet sendt ud/hentet ned af de andre servere. Hvis en server har opslaget i sin database kan det stadig vises af denne server. Dog kan der være problemer med billeder og videoer da de hentes fra den instans brugeren er på.
