I hate the fediverse.
gleasonator.com is buggy (can't update my profile to unlock it)
socks.pinnoto.org has inconsistent moderation (then again how do I know that gleasonator doesn't?)
plr.inferencium.net can't federate with many instances (including gleasonator and pinnoto) due to security hardening
I'm not sure which one to make my main.
The new version of Soapbox on gleasonator is slow as shit. I hope that's not the future of it.
Are you by chance using Firefox, the dying browser?
Yep. Are you optimizing for WebGL or something? Firefox works fine on everything except Google maps.
FireFox is like 2% of the market share, backed by a dying left-wing NGO, whose original creator now develops Brave. It's not super relevant and we just don't test for it.

I'd be interested to fix the underlying performance issues still, but you are in a shrinking minority if you use FireFox.
@HyolobrikaThe first thing I uninstall on every Linux distro, and the only thing I refuse to install on Windows. Firefox. It had a good run, then it engaged in fuckery. Oh well.
What do you use then?
@HyolobrikaDepends. Any of the chrome derivatives. Chromium, Brave, or if you don't care about your data for the particular task (like when I use gsuite for work) Chrome or Edge.
Do any of them support vertical tabs? That's the big thing I want more than anything. Brave has an open issue for it that's been out there for years. Vivaldi has it but has gone to crap speedwise compared to FF.

It seems like the most basic thing that no browser out there supports.
@HyolobrikaIt seems that there are chrome extensions that do this for chromium-based browsers. Your best compatibility would prolly be with Chrome or Edge on that, but I haven't tried it myself.

Alright, so I've tried several of these ... they're all varying degrees of terrible. Like ... really terrible. They barely provide a vertical tab interface, always via a popup or overlay that displays on top of the webpage.

This goes back to the original decision from Google which prevents any type of sidebar at all in their core engine/UI. It's the reason I originally hated Chrome as well.

There has been an open issue for Brave on this since 2018. People mention how fucking Microsoft Edge has vertical tabs!

https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/issues/464

...and here is another problem with non-FOSS browsers like Brave and Vivaldi. No one can take up this task and just hack on it. You're at the whim of Brendan Eich's company .. and judging by the bullshit that happened to him at Mozilla, I doubt he'd open source Brave any time soon.

If Brave ever implements this, I might give it a shot, but until then, I'll probably jump to LibreWolf next.
Brave is open source, it's on GitHub.
huh ... I thought they just used Github for bug tracking, but no, it does look like the entire thing is open source. TIL.
I would never use proprietary software :)
@Hyolobrikabad take, if this is what i have to experience if i want to use firefox i will absolutely have issues. you shouldn't ostracize browsers because you think they're 'outdated' or 'cringe' because they dont use the latest webpak, thats more cringe then anything firefox could do

i use edge as a daily driver but I use firefox on some devices and if i cant use the ""webapp"" soapbox because it's maintainer/developer doesnt want to support it then maybe we need to focus instead on working with current soapbox
We figured out the issue and are fixing it anyway, but note that Firefox struggles to display a simple SVG background without lagging. This browser is a burden.
soapbox is also extremely trash in safari btw you’re just lazy and bad and coming up with post hoc justifications for it. however i dont blame you personally for being what you are (web developer)
> just lazy

Safari is one of the browsers we do care about. More like, the web is so difficult and complex it's impossible to fix every bug.
@tedsafari is trash i agree with you but you did tell me a few weeks
I’m bad at estimating things. But starting to get a lot closer.
  • Chats: mostly fixed βœ…
  • Timeline bugs: mostly fixed βœ…
  • Emoji reacts: needs work ⚠️
  • FireFox performance: needs work ⚠️
Turned out to be a few months instead of weeks. But we’re really close now.
I use fe.soapbox.pub on #Librewolf and it works just fine. πŸ€·πŸΎβ€β™‚οΈ
OBS causes everything to lag, so hopefully this cell phone video gives you an idea. Compared to the old(er) Soapbox, it lags like a nightmare. This is on a system with 64GB of ram and a Ryzen 7 (5 series)
@alex@Hyolobrika
That behavior is intentional. We use a virtual window now for scrollable lists. This actually makes it faster, not slower, and if you scroll like a normal person it looks fine.

Navigating between pages is faster. Once you're scrolled down like 500 posts, the old version would start to lag horribly, while the new version is the same no matter how far you go. Because it only renders what's actually on the screen.
Okay that looks pretty bad
Can you open an issue with this video?
it also crashes on my phone if you scroll too fast like pleroma, displaying text and images shouldn’t be this difficult.
Displaying images is actually more difficult than you might think
@Hyolobrika> has inconsistent moderation (then again how do I know that gleasonator doesn't?)

I feel like the proper definition of "consistent moderation" would be a graduate-level course in philosophy. Alex bans articles on aerosolized meat fat being part of the general smog that covers Texas. It frightens vegans to realize they are breathing in animal products.
> Alex bans articles on aerosolized meat fat being part of the general smog that covers Texas. It frightens vegans to realize they are breathing in animal products.
@alex Is this true?
No. I don't read my timelines and when I get a report I laugh and close it.
Quite frankly, Soapbox has caused Firefox-ESR, Waterfox (Gecko), Vivaldi (Blink), AND Edge (Blink) to absolutely shit themselves, across both Windows and Linux. Rendering errors (weird blocks for no reason, plain white page cuz sure why not, etc.) eventually leading to the entire browser grinding to a halt, consistently. Although it’s more prominent on Gecko-based browsers, this isn’t a Firefox issue. This is a Soapbox has problems that need to be addressed issue. I switched back to PleromaFE because Soapbox made my instance unusable on any browser.
What version of Soapbox tho, blue bar or white bar on top?
