I made some progress here, understanding the management of users and groups.
Nevertheless, I am unhappy with the options to restrict accessibility to photos.

If you want to send photos to a particular group (of people) and make sure, these cant be seen by others, you have to
- upload photos when you send them, because choosing from the user album doesnt work
- even if it would work, it is inconvenient to set the accessibilty rights appropriately, because you have to do it with far too many clicks for each individual photo
- make all the group members follow you, so they can see the posted photos, because
- you have to have the restriction, that only followers are allowed to see the photos.
- also, you should remove yourself and the group (!) from the local directory and all public directories.

So friendica is apparently a bad choice for my purpose to run a social media server for family / clan purposes, no?

@Alexander Thank you for that summary, of how #photo upload works or better doesn't work well in #friendica
@Alexander Re: running a social media server for family (only). There are different options if you dont care about federation, e.g. Humhub or Nextcloud, or even Buddypress.
