So, I’m posting this in response to something that’s being shared around a little bit Somebody noticed that I’m a troop in the United States military, and started advocating that people in the #fediverse block me.
This is very informative but, coincidentally, will not reach the people who decided to block you on sight. I’m glad you did it but I don’t think you should have bothered to do it just to avoid a couple of blocks. The Fediverse is big, you (and I) can’t please everybody and it’s fine.

came across the fedi block debate and was surprised to see them talking about you. I've read your posts in the past and it didn't compute. thanks for that writeup. it confirmed my suspicion that you are pretty awesome guy who uses brain and heart well and to good causes. keep doing what you're doing and be yourself.

awe, thank you, Luka!
Yeah, the topic comes up every now and then. I think some people tend to think in infinitives, in the sense that they group all people together based on a loose association, and then use ideology to label them. I can't say I 100% blame them, but it's an approach that lacks nuance and, on some level, empathy. I think that the act of accepting "the enemy" as ordinary people is a disturbing thought for lots of folk.
Actually, I've been very surprised in the quality of people I've met in my brief military career so far. Of course, there are some not-so-great people...but, I've met a surprising amount of thoughtful, funny, kind human beings throughout the entire process of being a trainee. It's made the experience a lot better than expected.
I'm not surprised you met quality people at the time you enlisted. After all, you are a quality people. But more generally, financial hardship like you suffered makes joining the army a viable economic choice. So many people join around economic crises not because they love the idea of the military, but because they need the money and the job security.
They probably aren't anywhere like the people who joined the military just after the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001.
