PIleated woodpecker on the Cornell nest a few minutes ago. What a striking bird!

I think that because we have a lot of mature trees in the area, it is a hot spot for woodpeckers and their kin. On an average day I see two or three in the yard. The Pileated I see once or twice a quarter, I usually hear them more often.
We see lots of flickers and both hairy and downy woodpeckers, but we very seldom see a Pileated.

Wait. I get it. Striking.

We get hairy, downy, and yellow-bellied. A red headed lives up the hill and occasionally visits.

I did see a pileated on our woodpile a few years ago. For a minute I thought I was looking at an ivory billed. Hah.
@Jarasy now THAT would have been something!
